NOTE: The Restoration House of East Tennessee (TRH) is in the midst of a capital campaign to build The Village, a 24-home community for single-mother families scheduled to break ground in spring 2013. We know it takes a village to build The Village – many who are willing to financially support the campaign, others who design and build the physical structures, and countless others who pray with us and help us discuss, plan and ensure the very best program and community to help single-mother families restore their lives to God’s good intent. We are so blessed to have so many people who support single mothers and their children, our mission, year-round teams of volunteers and mentors, and when it comes to The Village several key partners who have helped bring our vision for The Village to life. We are putting a spotlight on these folks and hope you will enjoy knowing the work of these wonderfully talented experts within our community who’ve already made an impact on The Village and the community we are building for single-mother families in west Knoxville.

Management Solutions, comprehensive owner’s representative services and solutions
Q&A with Sam Mayes, PE, Vice President
TEAMWORK: We look at every project we manage and determine what expertise and skills are needed to make a project a reality — whatever the scope – and for The Village project I am joined by Devan Brown, PH.D., LEED AP, and other MSLLC representatives.
OWNER REPRESENTATION SERVICES: The team concept definitely carries through to our work on The Village. For The Village, we are helping with what is called owner representation services. We essentially team together with the project owners – in this case, The Restoration House (TRH) – and help them by ensuring that expectations, budgets and performance schedules are clearly communicated and managed throughout the duration of a project. By doing this, TRH staff can focus on TRH business and TRH leadership can be confident that the build process is being managed professionally by a team of construction project and solution experts.
PLANNING FOR GROUNDBREAKING: There are a multitude of steps that must take place before any dirt can be moved and buildings can be constructed, so we provide expertise and support to Daniel Watson and his team to enable a smooth project flow pre, during and post-construction. We work with the designers and engineers to create the pre-qualification and official bid packages (to determine project builder), assemble a team to evaluate the bids, put together a high-level cost estimate to help determine budgets for the project, provide oversight at the construction site and create and manage the project schedule to ensure it can be on time and on budget.
QUARTERBACK: While working with Daniel (Watson) and The Restoration House, a.k.a the project owner, we are there to represent the owner and their interests throughout the construction process. We are not there to actually build the community and its buildings, but we have an ongoing presence and involvement to make sure performance, schedules and budgets are adhered to in order to have a successful completion of the project.
COMMAND CENTER: There are so many different entities involved when managing a construction project – from designers, architects, and landscape architects to code enforcement and the many, many builders on site. It can be a daunting task to make sure everyone understands the impact they have on others throughout the duration of the build. Therefore, we identify action items, assign responsibility, and track efforts against the schedule. We serve as the communications hub between Daniel (Watson), the project owner, and other project participants (lending agencies, sureties, contractors, design professionals, etc.) to ensure everyone is up-to-date on current status of the project.
THREE WORDS: When I think of The Village three things come to mind: needed, single moms and thankful.
MAKING THE COMMUNITY STRONGER: We are thankful to be a part of this special project since it is so needed in our community. It is something that is such a good thing, a local project, and we love helping to make a difference in the community. We’ve known Daniel and Mandy for years, we see the good work they are doing and we really enjoy working with them on this next very important phase in the journey of The Restoration House. It will be fun for all of us to see this dream, this project, this community become a reality.
